It was a disappointing end to a great day at the Cheltenham Festival, but Un Beau Roman is back home having a well-earned rest and he'll be back to fight another day.
There had been so much excitement and build up to this year's Cheltenham Gold Cup day at the Festival. And we had been especially excited to be involved in such a prestigious day, and not only that but to be heading there with a horse who had delivered so well for us at Cheltenham this season and who looked to have a chance of putting in a great performance.
The day lived up to expectations, with a packed out crowd of 65,000 in attendance and an electric atmosphere around the course. It was a day of exciting racing, including the main event, where Sizing John put in an incredible performance to take the Gold Cup in a scintillating race.
A huge crowd stayed on to watch the final race, The Grand Annual, which was Un Beau's Festival Debut. After a false start, the horses were pulled back and the race finally got under way. Un Beau hit a fence hard at the beginning of the race and at this level it was a big ask to get back into the mix. It turned out to be too much of an ask and despite the best efforts of Nick Schofield, he ended up being tailed off.
A disappointing finish to a great day racing. But the achievement of getting to the festival for a yard with 18 horses cannot be overlooked.
Happily, Un Beau ate up once he got back home and after a bit of rest, he'll be back in the fold. We're sure he can still deliver a few more great days for the connections and yard. And as for Cheltenham Festival, there's always next year...
